Skincare is relative to different individuals and how they manifest their ideologies and maximize their resources. However, for Tife Adunade, Skincare before anything else is embracing a hygienic lifestyle that starts from within. Simply put, ‘the path to a glowing body is through the mouth to the stomach’; which solely depends on eating healthy and staying hydrated at all times. In her words, she expressed the importance of proper nutrition and understanding one’s body needs. As a Natural Movement enthusiast, she shed light on modest ways to care for the skin and talked about the need for everyone who desires a glowing skin to break certain habits. In this interview, she described the skin as the largest organ in the body. She said, “Skincare is not your face! It’s your entire body. I feel people need to know this and get what skincare really means.”
What does healthy nutrition mean to you?
I’m simple words, eating what your body needs and not what your body wants.
Would you say your skin tells a tale of what you eat?
Absolutely! My skin is a testimony of what I eat than use (I don’t even use anything fantastic on it). I’m super conscious about what I eat and how it affects my skin and hair. And boy do I drink water!
So, do you follow any nutrition plan to make your skin glow, asides from drinking plenty of water?
No exact nutritional plan. I am a student, and we all know how hard it is to be a student and have nutritional anything. But I definitely don’t take so much soda, I eat a lot of fruits, I’m not a fan of red beef and I don’t eat oily foods. Just the basics I guess.
Are you a convener of all things ‘natural’ movement?
I love the idea. But I don’t think I can keep up. I remember about a year back I was all team natural. I then changed my deodorant to this natural salt bar. It was awful for the first week but after that, it was superb. I did not stink at all. Plus it was a good exfoliator. I then used Shea butter as my body lotion and my natural hair care was all-natural stuff.
At some point I honestly got tired. It takes so much time and energy to do some things and all. I switched back to normal chemical-based cosmetics. I just ensure that nothing tones or brightens my skin or does any other funny function aside moisturize and provide sunscreen.
Presently, do you use any natural products for your skin or hair?
Yes. I still use Shea butter after my night bath. And you really can’t escape a DIY once in a while as a natural hair person.
How often do you wear your hair naturally?
Most of the time. It’s mostly when I have exams coming up I don’t wear my natural hair
Talking about food, has there ever been a time you visited a place just to eat a meal you’ve heard about?
So many! I am a foodie. I love discovering food and places and all those sorts of thing.
What products do you use for your natural hair?
Presently the entire range of bio care labs naturals, Shea butter by kinky crowns, coconut oil, castor oil, vitamin e oil and olive oil from kinky crowns too. I use hair wonder shampoo once in a while. I also have beautiful textures leave in which I alternate with Bio care labs. Those are the products I use right now.
Your Instagram page is absolute goals. Can you share any posting tips?
I never assumed my Instagram was that pretty. I just try as much to put up quality pictures and stuff I know people would relate with. Relatable content is key. Plus I plan my post. Just, so I see how they look or would look before I actually put them up.
Your Instagram feed and highlights show off your travels a lot. Do you have any tips or tricks on how to do skincare/haircare on the go?
I have small containers where I pack everything in. They are like 60ml bottles or so. That way I don’t feel the weight of what I’m carrying and I get to take all my essentials with me.
What is your advice for people who want to start getting more into a healthy lifestyle (nutrition) but are so used to consuming junks?
The honest trust is you can’t cut it all off at once. You’d only come back to the same thing. Start with little replacements. Replace soda with water (buy a big fancy water bottle. That’s what I did) and give yourself a cheat day once every two weeks or something like that. Man cannot come and kill thyself. Once you have seen that you really would not die if you don’t take it, move on to cutting your biscuits/ cookies intake or replace them with healthier cookies. Gradually you’d have a grip of a solid enough healthy life. And whatever you do, try to eat breakfast as cliché as it sounds I realized how much better you feel and how easier it is to avoid certain things because I ate breakfast. I’m not perfect or there yet, but with my baby steps I definitely would hit the healthy lifestyle I want to attain.
What inspired you to start a lifestyle (Instagram) blog?
I used to be terribly introverted. And I had things I wanted to talk about and I just started that way. Over time the blog took shape to what it has become. What inspires me to actually keep going is life. I like cute things in life. I like discovering food, culture, people and just generally things that one your mind.
Is it just a daily expression of your lifestyle or is it a full-fledged business?
My blog is definitely a daily expression of my lifestyle. I’ve never really taken it as a serious business. I’m just documenting my process and growth and enjoying myself while doing it.
Ever gone makeup-free, for how long?
I do not even wear makeup. So I am always makeup-free. Asides the lip balm, gloss or occasional lipstick, I have no makeup skill.
How does your skin feel when you’re not wearing any makeup?
Literally like a normal person. But when I do wear makeup (and this is the reason I don’t); my face feels clogged and heavy; like it can’t breathe. I always have breakout anytime I wear makeup plus some scents used in the products trigger a reaction from my respiratory tract sometimes.
What are your best tips for treating acne?
Wash your face regularly. Don’t go looking for products everywhere. Wash your face morning and night. Use clean handkerchief all the time. You would be surprised that it’s the dirty habits people have that cause acne. The moments your makeup brushes are washed right and your general hygiene are a bit better you’d see improvements. And for very clean people I’d advise you see a pro skincare person to help out. Don’t just go buying stuff and applying.
Do you use any mask products?
I used to use one by Oriflame. I love it. But I have not been able to lay my hands on it so for now, I don’t
Have you checked our Instagram page, what do you think about us?
I definitely have. I like the movement and the message being passed across. I think the pictures and interface generally can be way better.
Final words?
Oh! Definitely. Skincare is not your face! It’s your entire body. The skin is the largest organ in the body; it is not restricted to your face. I feel people need to know this and get what skincare really means. Plus, you cannot apply so many products on the outside to actually get the job the inside of your body is supposed to do. Eat right, exercise, and drink water until your pee is transparent. Do all those healthy things. Use fewer chemicals. Use sunscreen. You would see better results.
